Online Encyclopedias

Biodiversity Heritage Library

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper article (July 21, 2009, e1, e8) the Biodiversity Heritage Library consists of a consortium of libraries that are scanning images of first described plants and animals and making them available online. Danianne Mizzy, Library Director at the Academy of Natural Sciences, states "Taxonomic literature is the opposite of wanting to know only what's the most current and up to date by which everything is superceded....the first description [of a plant or animal] is always the typeset, so the half-life of 'how long is this relevant in taxonomic literature' is much longer than any other scientific literature." This project involves scanning published material only and will collaborate with another project called the Encyclopedia of Life (www.eol.org).

Encyclopedia of Life

"...is an ambitious, even audacious project to organize and make available via the Internet virtually all information about life present on Earth. At its heart lies a series of Web sites—one for each of the approximately 1.8 million known species—that provide the entry points to this vast array of knowledge. The entry-point for each site is a species page suitable for the general public, but with several linked pages aimed at more specialized users. The sites sparkle with text and images that are enticing to everyone, as well as providing deep links to specific data.

"Established in 2004, the NIH Blueprint for Neuroscience Research brings the 16 NIH Institutes, Centers and Offices that support neuroscience research into a collaborative framework to coordinate their ongoing efforts and to plan new cross-cutting initiatives. Working together, representatives from the partner Institutes, Centers, and Offices identify pervasive challenges in neuroscience and any technological barriers to solving them.
Early in their deliberations Blueprint representatives recognized that a framework for identifying, locating, relating, accessing, integrating, and analyzing information from the neuroscience research enterprise is critical to enhancing cooperative activities in the neurosciences."

This system is designed for use by emergency physicians, first responders, other health care providers, Poison Control Center staff, and concerned citizens."

North American Bird Phenology Program

"...houses a unique and largely forgotten collection of six million Migration Observer Cards that illuminate migration patterns and population status of birds in North America. These handwritten cards contain almost all of what was known of bird distribution and natural history from the Second World War back to the later part of the 19th century. The bulk of the records are the result of a network of observers who recorded migration arrival dates in the spring and fall that, in its heyday, involved 3000 participants. Today, those records are being processed and placed into a modern database for analysis. This information will be used, along with recently collected arrival times of migrant birds, in conjunction with historical weather data to show how migration is effected by climate change." This website has a link for those who would be interested in volunteering to enter data from these cards into a database.

Scientific Commons: a Community for Scientific Information

"The major aim of the project is to develop the world’s largest communication medium for scientific knowledge products which is freely accessible to the public. A key challenge of the project is to support the rapidly growing number of movements and archives who admit the free distribution and access to scientific knowledge....Currently ScientificCommons.org has indexed about 13 million scientific publications and successfully extracted 6 million authors' names out of this data (January 2007)...ScientificCommons.org is a project of the University of St.Gallen (Switzerland) and hosted and developed at the Institute for Media and Communications Management."
